Our Story
Como Lions Heart is a Lake Como-based nonprofit organization serving the Fort Worth community since March of 2015. The executive director, Carol Brown, has experience serving the Lake Como community for over 40 years. Como Lions Heart supports families, youth, and seniors through community-based programs. Including the Como Mobile Food Pantry, after-school programs, summer day camps, senior programs, educational programs, holiday events, and programs to prepare college students for the future such as the College Dorm Kit where freshman college students, mainly from the Lake Como area, are supplied everything needed to furnish their college dorm rooms fully. The Lake Como community is 1 square mile and home to around 7,500 residents, plus businesses, churches, charitable organizations, non-profits, alumni, and social clubs that strive to grow and preserve the community. With the events that Como Lions Heart plans for not only the Lake Como community but for the city of Fort Worth, many of the Lake Como residents come out to participate in the events and volunteer. From the annual Mother’s Day Luncheon which hosts between 300 to 350 people to the Back to School Fair which averages between 300 to 400 children between the ages of 4 to 18, our community is the heartbeat of Como Lions Heart, pulsating with shared joy, love, and support. On average, about 1,500 to 2,000 residents participate in the events and programs year-round.
Before Como Lions Heart there was CYPP, Como Youth Promoting Pride. Starting in the 80’s, Carol Brown, then supervisor of the Como Community Center, started the afterschool program, which was the first in the city and has set the tone for other after-school programs in Fort Worth. CYPP has continued the Como Community Easter Egg Hunt, hosting the Mother’s Day Luncheon, Halloween Fall Festival, Back-to-School Fair, College Dorm Kit Program, and Cowboy Santa. The majority of these events are over three decades old. When Carol Brown retired from the Como Community Center in 2015, she did not leave the community. She has stayed to make sure that the youth, families, and senior citizens of Lake Como continue to have programs and events throughout the year.
Como Lions Heart has expanded its community outreach significantly since its establishment. Initially focused on various support programs, it has since added initiatives such as the Como Mobile Food Pantry and "Friday Night Lights," which aims to engage youth that participate in free play on Friday nights providing food and a safe space. Additionally, Como Lions Heart has introduced conferences tailored for youth and women, creating platforms for empowerment, education, and networking. The youth conference addresses relevant issues and provides guidance, while the women's conference focuses on personal development and community leadership.
Ending the year with the Jingle and Mingle Christmas Party showcases local vendors and is a festive event designed to bring the community together during the holiday season. Como Lions Heart played a significant role in a city program known as Cowboy Santa, which served as a toy drive aimed at providing gifts to children during the holiday season. This initiative was important for the Lake Como community, as it helped spread holiday cheer and support families in need. However, when the Cowboy Santa program was discontinued, Carol Brown was determined to continue the spirit of giving in the community. She recognized the importance of ensuring that children received toys during the holidays, so she took the initiative to establish the Como Lions Heart Christmas Toy Giveaway. This program ensures that children in the area receive toys during the holiday season, emphasizing the importance of community support and inclusiveness.
Through our various initiatives, Como Lions Heart strives to create a supportive and inclusive environment where community members can thrive. We invite you to explore our programs and join us in our efforts to make a positive impact in Lake Como.
